‘Queens of Fado – The Next Generation’ features today’s new generation of fadistas including: Cuca Roseta, Yolanda Soares, Carminho, Raquel Tavares, Gisela João, Claudia Aurora, Carla Pires and Joana Rios. ‘Queens of Fado – The Next Generation’ is the successive album in ARC Music’s fado catalogue after ‘New Queens of Fado’(2016) which included the global ambassador of fado, Mariza; the highly acclaimed Ana Moura; the powerful, seductively romantic voice of Cristina Branco and the prestigious talents of Maria Ana Bobone and Mísia. It also follows on from the undisputed ‘A Rainha do Fado’ – ‘The Queen of Fado – Amália Rodrigues’ Volumes 1 (2011) and Volume II (2012).
Cuca Roseta sings ‘Amor Ladrão’ on ‘Queens of Fado – The Next Generation’, produced by Ricardo Cruz. Cuca Roseta’s third album, Riû (2015, Universal), saw Cuca sharing her own compositions with Bryan Adams, Djavan, Jorge Drexler, Pedro Jóia, among many others. The album reached ‘Platinum’ and the release was followed by the ‘Riû Tour’, taking the singer to the four corners of the world, with over 120 concerts in one year.
Yolanda Soares opens the album with ‘Lianor’ accompanied by the master of guitarra portuguesa, Custodio Castelo. As a graduate of Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa, Yolanda has studied master classes with national and international lyric singers such as Elizete Bayan, Elena Dumitrescu-Nentwig, Enza Ferrari, Lella Curbelli and Fiorenza Cossotto as well as the Portuguese soprano Elvira Ferreira. In 2005 her album ‘Musicbox - Fado en Concerto’ won Yolanda a contract with Universal Music Portugal.
Carminho’s breathtaking performances on ‘Queens of Fado – The Next Generation’ include ‘As Pedras da Minha Rua’ and ‘Saia Rodada’. Carminho’s much-anticipated debut album, ‘Fado’ (2009, Warner Music Portugal), went Platinum, opening many doors including a tour in European capitals, WOMEX and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Carminho is one of the most successful, charming and intense of modern fadistas.
Gisela João’s self-titled album was released in July 2013 and just two weeks later it was #1 one on the national sales charts. Hailed as the most important debut album of a Portuguese artist in the 21st century, Gisela was awarded the prize of ‘Revelation Amália’, with whom her talent has several times been compared. Gisela João won Woman of the Year 2015 award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Individual Performer at the 19th Golden Globes Gala.
Carla Pires’ unique fado voice helped her to establish an impressive live and recording career, which started in 2008 with a 10-concert tour of France. She tours constantly, entertaining audiences in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America with over 370 performances around the world. Carla Pires’ third solo album ‘Aqui’ (2016, Ocarina) was followed by the ‘Aqui’ world tour.
Raquel Tavares performed recently at WOMAD 2017 festival in the UK before an enthusiastic audience of thousands. Her 2016 album ‘Raquel’ (Sony Music) with guest appearances by Rui Massena, Carlão, Rui Veloso and António Serrano, peaked at Number 1 on the Portuguese official album chart. Claudia Aurora performed as a special guest on the BBC Radio 3 stage at WOMAD in 2012 with great success: Silencio’s sales were among the highest of the entire festival. Claudia has since made London her base, gone on to play shows in countries as far-flung as Poland and South Korea, and completed the UK’s biggest tour ever undertaken by a fado singer. Joana Rios sings traditional fado to a traditional accompaniment with guitarra portuguesa and classical guitar, with even her original compositions respecting the structure of traditional fado, and is the resident fado singer at the famous fado house Páteo Alfacinha.
‘Queens of Fado – The Next Generation’ carries forward the fado musical heritage that has been inscribed in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Released worldwide through ARC Music on 27th October, 2017.
